the Twitter fail whale error message.

After days of waiting in excruciating silence while I waited for the new Twitter format to roll-out, the waiting has ended today! The new format may be old news for some Twitterati but for me… well it’s like a new toy.

The format is certainly welcome and needed; countless dashboard applications have penetrated the social media scene promising to keep your timelines, trending topics and shared links cohesive and clean and all on one easy to manage page. I have been using HootSuite for several months now, having made the switch from Tweetdeck since it just wasn’t aesthetically pleasing to me.

Looks like Twitter has woken up and smelled the proverbial bacon. It’s a smart move in another way; by keeping the Twitterati glued to the actual site, API hits will hit a new low, thereby lessening the dreaded ‘Fail Whale‘…it’s a WIN/WIN situation!

{major navigational tabs} One of the first changes I like is the move of the navigational tabs from the side bar to directly under the composition box:

Having tabs enabled like this is one way that the new Twitter becomes more of an information hub. It’s basically all of the links you had on the side bar but it’s put in a place that makes more sense and keeps you up to date with new in the Twitter world.

{personal information hub}

For a forgetful person like me, this is great…I can see my last favorited tweet, and which lists I’ve been recently included in. Of course, the same ol’ Trends, Followers/Following, App Suggestions and Follow Suggestions make an appearance here as well.

Last but not least is the crown jewel of { Twitter 2.0: Dynamic In-Page Tweets } This works best is you follow interesting people who actually have something good to share such as links, pictures or videos:

By just clicking on one tweet with a link, you can simultaneously see who has retweeted the same status, that user’s timeline and if a hashtag is included in the tweet, the pane will also show all instances (at the time) of other statuses with the same hashtag.

I’m loving the new Twitter…it places all the information I need or want to know on the same page, eliminates my need to constantly press the ‘Back’ button and also saves me on API hits.

If you’re a new user of Twitter 2.0, send me your thoughts about it on Twitter!
